GridPP-storage 20170816 Present: Sam, Jens (chair+mins), David, Dan, Brian, Matt 1. The pre-GDB and what we might want to present Sam helpfully sent a link to the current agenda (see chatlog). Object storage mostly suggests “RAL” but some of the cloud storage integration may be relevant. As an aside we discussed making data available for users in the cloud, compare the (rather old now) Kaggle Higgs challenge. Dynafed suggests the DAV 3rd party copying as a topic; Sam reports that currently three sites in the UK support this: ECDF, Glasgow, and Lancaster. However, there is not much to present here, maybe 1 slide. Note that DPM may need stricter dependencies, as it is possible to install and not get the 3rd party copying support - which is perhaps helpful for sites that don’t need it but in our context it would be best to have it. Archive suggests again RAL, and CTA. Could you do archival storage on disk? Perhaps but archive is more than replication and backups. As regards accounting, Jens had intended to do something with GLUE2, the JSON format, and Swordfish, maybe accounting records and StAR, if there is time - tbc. Matt reports an updated collector, John had requested an update at Lancaster - Jens will check with John at the next opportunity. 2. GridPP Are there things we should do at GridPP? We used to have a “storage slot” where we stood up to tell the others how wonderful we are, but have now gone to a more modest model of having the experiments’ representatives stand up and say how wonderful we are. * Non-SRM sites. - Space token in non-SRM: DPM has support in DAV when using DOME, declared OK by ATLAS. - See also Pete’s network paper. * While the T2C/T2D discussion is not fully resolved, we do have clearer indications from experiments - and it should be driven by them. * There’s human effort required to run storage systems, but limited, which is why we have, as of the previous GridPP, the Power Rangers model. How would it actually work, could we report in it at this GridPP? - It could work remotely, if site admins were happy to give remote access, and the discussions could be coordinated (Vidyo, Skype, Google hangouts?) - It could make use of a geographically dispersed PR team, so one member could reasonably travel to ${site} and help with something. - It could make use of shared time at hepsysman and GridPP, to get people together huddled over laptops with strong cups of coffee. Maybe we should ask for a slot to do some Real Work™ at the GridPP. 3. AOB Call for volunteer to host the next DPM workshop? Southernish parts of the country could include RAL, London, Oxford, Bham. RAL could probably always host it given enough warning but is disadvantaged, morally speaking, by not being a DPM site. Maybe B’ham could be persuaded? Should we have a meeting next week or not? Maybe an informal chat. We should definitely meet on 6 Sep., as it’s the week before both pre-GDB and GridPP.
