Minutes of the storage EVO meeting 16 Feb 2011 Present: Glasgow: Sam, David Edinburgh: Wahid Sheffield: Elena Lancaster: Matt Oxford: Ewan RHUL: Govind RAL T1: James, Brian, Jens (chair+mins) [Slightly terse version since I lost the first writeup in a vi accident.] 0. Regarding Ewan's action to send Areca stuff to Sam, Ewan will send something. 1. Small VOs. dteam discussed space tokens for small VOs. For DPM, a space token is associated with a guaranteed space allocation. The main problem for smaller VOs is probably the basic usability, ie they need to learn lcg-utils. Sam will look into whether it is feasible to write a tool that makes it easier. Default for lcg-cr is "default SE" which is set in the environment. Small VOs are likely to use lcg-utils also for local access, unless they recycle software from the larger VOs. NeISS are still working out their data management - also considered iRODS (Guy Warner - Jens to contact Guy..) 2. Brian attended Hadoop workshop Thursday (10th or thereabouts) CEPH and HDFS have S3 interfaces. Most likely use of cloud storage is for doing computation; access to data is free in storage from the same provider, otherwise all transfers incur costs. Could sites make use of cloud economic models or elasticity to meet needs of indecisive VOs? Possibly, but maybe not highly likely; need cost models which are being worked on by other projects. [Clouds can also be used to replicate "hot" data - jj] 3. AOB Jens away next week.
